If you choose to marry in St John’s, you are the hosts and we are your guest. We’d
love to share in your celebrations, and help you to make it a day special for you in
beautiful and welcoming church.
You're welcome to marry here whatever your beliefs, whether or not you are
christened and whether or not you regularly go to church. It’s your church and we
welcome you! At St John’s we understand that spiritual beliefs are complex and
varied, and we celebrate our diversity and respect your integrity. Marrying in
church has never been easier and for such a special day, we offer a special place.
You probably have questions you’d like to ask, so to help you get started….
Can we get married in St John’s if it’s not our local church?
If you live in Moordown Parish you can get married in St John’s as your local
church. However we know that you might live outside of Moordown but still like to
marry here because it is special for you. The law says that you can marry in St
John’s church, Moordown, if you can show just one of the following:-
that one of you:
has at any time lived in the parish of Moordown for a period of at least 6
months or
was baptised in St John’s Church or St Birinus Mission Church, Moordown or
was prepared for confirmation in Moordown parish or
has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in St John’s
Church or St Birinus Mission Church, Moordown, for a period of at least 6
months or
that one of your parents, at any time after you were born:
has lived in Moordown parish for a period of at least 6 months or
has regularly gone to normal church services St John’s Church or St Birinus
Mission Church, Moordown, for a period of at least 6 months or
that one of your parents or grandparents:
was married St John’s Church or St Birinus Mission Church, Moordown.
What if one or both of us is divorced?
At St John’s we recognise that some marriages do fail for all sorts of sad and
painful reasons. In many circumstances the Church of England accepts that a
divorced person may marry. We welcome that at St John’s and we would be
privileged to celebrate with you the love you have found in each other. The vicar
would be glad to talk with you, not just about your past and but also about your
hopes for the future, and to arrange a service for you.
How much does it cost?
There is no doubt that the choices you make about your wedding day can make a
huge impact on the cost. If you choose to marry in St John’s, we want it to be a
day that is personal and special for you, but that need not mean you spend a
fortune. There is a relatively small legal fee for marrying in a church, for most
couples it is £296, with an additional fee of £33 for the verger who takes care of
the practicalities on the wedding day. But you may want more. Flowers, organist,
choir, bell-ringing, etc, are optional additional services that can be provided by St
John’s. Please don’t be embarrassed to ask about the cost of these.
What do we do next?
If you have any questions at all please contact the vicar who will be more than
happy to help you. If you’d like to get married at St John’s we’d be delighted to
help you to arrange all that needs doing so you can enjoy your special day in a
way that reflects your love and helps you enjoy the occasion.
Please use our details on the contact page to get in touch. We look forward to
welcoming you and celebrating with you.
