St. Luke's Scool
FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
St Luke’s C E Primary School The beginning of Spring Term saw the welcome return
of Daniel Hunwick our Deputy Head Teacher from his secondment, though at the same
time, Governors expressed sincere thanks to Mrs. Kate Tuck for leading the school
with exemplary expertise and professionalism during Daniel’s absence.
The School is actively engaged in Safeguarding Children, and focussing
on e-safety, has completed an audit based on national framework. Other aspects to
this growing area of concern has been the leading of a whole-school e-safety day
which will include a parent open evening.
Governors were delighted to congratulate St Luke’s School PTFA on the realisation
of sufficient funds to purchase a new school minibus. We know and very much appreciate
that many fund raising events have taken place to make this possible, and we offer
our heartfelt thanks to all concerned!
There is a determined initiative to raise academic standards across the whole school,
focussing on Mathematics at the Juniors and Literacy at the infants site. It is
recognised that the overall quality of Numeracy learning is good throughout the
school, though an aspect that we are seeking to develop in greater depth is teaching
and learning of problem solving skills. Various techniques, means of encouragement
and “tools” continue to be explored, notably the acquisition last year of a number
of Nintendo DS maths games, which are adding a new dimension to learning and understanding.
Accordingly staff are receiving ongoing training to ensure that maximum emphasis
is given to teaching efficient and workable methods of calculation to the children.
The use of an online numeracy resource known as Mathletics has aided home learning
considerably.
The staff in all subjects are always pleased to give any practical support or advice
to
parents wishing to help their children make the most of the opportunities we
offer at the school and to ensure that the learning environment continues into the home.
The school is making active steps towards a more ‘Creative Curriculum’, which will
doubtless bring about changes that will see our pupils learning in a new and exciting way, though at the same time providing for our children an environment which is
secure both physically and spiritually. Of great importance to us is the partnership
between parent and school, based upon a mutual desire to provide the highest possible
standard of education and nurture for our children.
