St Luke's Choir, Bournemouth is a friendly SATB church choir. We sing music from plainsong to the present day taken from the church and cathedral repertoire. Items sung by the choir include music written by Byrd, Palestrina, Tallis, Purcell, Tye, Bruckner, Elgar, Fauré, Sumsion, Charles Wood,Stanford, Bairstow, Vaughan Williams, Rutter, Malcolm Archer and many others. We lead the congregation in singing the hymns and settings and also sing solo items during communion at the Sunday morning service. In addition we sing Cathedral-style choral evensongs and special seasonal services.
The History of the Organ at St. Luke's can be found by following this link.
History of the Organ
Choir practise is from 7-8pm on Friday evening; we sing at the main Sunday morning
10am service each week in term time.
We have members of all ages. Children and adults are equally welcome to join. Singing
in the choir gives musical youngsters the opportunity to gain experience of singing
in four or more parts. Children who play musical instruments find that singing regularly,
not only develops their voice but also helps improve their aural skills and increases
their knowledge of music of all periods. They also have the opportunity to play
pieces before, during and after services and when we give concerts.
University students, also, are very welcome to join during their time in Bournemouth.
Our rehearsals take place about twenty minutes walk from the Wallisdown campus. We
combine with the Cantamus Chamber Choir
also run by St Luke's Musical Director, Malcolm Wood) to sing a traditional festival
of nine lessons and carols at Christmas time.We have performed concerts together
with Bournemouth School for Girls choirs and with the Bournemouth Youth Handbell
team.
If you would like to come for an informal (relaxed/friendly) audition please contact
Malcolm Wood, Director of Music
at St Luke's Church.
